Who is this holiday for?

An intro to Queensland

With plenty of must-see Sunshine State spots, including many symbols of Australia (think beaches, islands, uber cool cities and dense rainforests), this trip is a great choice for first timers. On the other hand, it works perfectly if you’re returning to Aus following a previous visit, that may have focused more on Western Australia, Melbourne, Sydney or the Red Centre.

How to travel

Fly and drive

Queensland is a big state, so the trip has been designed with a flight included to cover the long distance between north and south as quickly as possible, car hire for the shorter hops and hotels in cities best placed for your own adventures. If you’ve got more time to spare, you could drive it all from the sub-tropical south to the tropical north, adding in a couple of nights in the Whitsundays Islands and a few single nights along the way to break up the longest journeys. Our Queensland Pacific Coast self-drive breaks down how to do it.

Days 1-2

Singapore

To break up the journey and slowly get you acclimatised to the time change, a couple of nights in Singapore are included. Get out and about in the ‘Garden City’ to shake off the jet lag, perhaps dipping into Raffles for a Singapore Sling, watching the light show illuminate the Super Trees of Gardens by the Bay, and finding your favourite hawker stalls.

Day 3

Cairns

Touch down on Australian soil in Cairns, the gateway to Queensland’s Tropical North. A night’s been set aside here to relax following your second international flight, but you could aways stay a little longer before picking up your hire car and setting off. On the other hand, you could also skip Cairns altogether if you’re keen kick off your holiday in Port Douglas.

Days 4-6

Port Douglas

In Queensland, the natural UNESCO-listed headliners are the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Thankfully you don’t have to choose between the two up in Port Douglas as this is where they meet. Three nights have been dedicated to the region so you could spend a full day exploring each; we’ve got some experiences that you could elevate your holiday with, including trips into the rainforest with an indigenous focus, cruises out to the reef, and sunset sails.

Ngana Kulkinga Dungay, Port Douglas
Tropical North Queensland

On a full-day Nagana Kulkinga Dungay tour, you'll be collected from your hotel and taken on an adventure through Kuku Yalanji country. You'll see some culturally significant sights and local attractions, including the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest. A local Aboriginal guide will lead the way, and you'll learn about the relationship the Kuku Yalanji people still have with their land. You'll walk through the world's oldest living rainforest, see natural wonders, and see where the rainforest meets the reef.

Plus, you'll explore coastal habitats and learn about the environment, different foods, and medicines that are derived from nature. There’s the chance to sample some bush tucker and take a dip in one of the pristine freshwater streams in the area.

• Duration: 8½ hours
• Start time: 8am
• Monday to Saturday departures
• Operates year-round
• Group experience

Cape Tribulation & Daintree Wilderness
Australia

Wander through the recreated natural environments of Wildlife Habitat on an immersive guided experience where you will learn about the many species in our region. Then cross the Daintree River for lunch at Mason’s Café and enjoy a dip in the freshwater swimming hole. Explore the world’s oldest rainforest with one of the knowledgeable local guides and visit Cape Tribulation Beach. Stop at Alexandra Lookout before boarding a cruise and search for wildlife including Estuarine Crocodiles.

• Duration: full day
• Start time: 7.15am
• Daily departures from Cairns
• Operates year-round
• Group experience

Quicksilver Outer Barrier Reef Cruise Snorkelling
Australia

Board Quicksilver’s 45-metre high-speed catamaran on a full-day cruise to Agincourt Reef on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Explore the reef from a semi-submersible, an underwater observatory or snorkel and dive. This cruise is ideal for those keen to do lots of activities and for those wanting to add a wonderful airborne perspective, helicopter transfers are also available (at a supplement).

Departs from Port Douglas.

• Duration: full day
• Start time: 9am
• Daily departures
• Operates year-round
• Group experience

Sailaway Sunset Sail
Australia

Board your Sailaway vessel at Port Douglas Marina and set off on a sunset sail cruise along the Port Douglas coastline on board a first class sailing catamaran. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a tropical sunset over the Coral Sea with spectacular mountain views, and enjoy a complimentary welcome drink alongside a selection of canapés.

• Duration: 1½ hours
• Start time 4.30pm
• Daily departures
• Operates year-round
• Group experience

Days 7-8

Sunshine Coast

Head back to Cairns, hop on a flight down to Brisbane and collect another car. Then it’s time to hit the beach, Sunshine Coast style. You can choose to stay in relaxed Mooloolaba or the uber popular (but for good reason) town of Noosa. Wherever you find your perfect beach set up, you’ll be in easy reach of cool cafés, sparkling surf, and national parks that rate highly for natural beauty and sun-soaked activities.

Days 9-10

Hervey Bay/K’Gari

It’s just over an hour-and-a-half drive north to Hervey Bay, your springboard to the unforgettable shifting sands of K’Gari. You’ve got a couple options here – a) pick a hotel on the mainland and hop over to K’Gari for a full-on day trip or b) park your hire car and go all in for some overnight island adventures with a stay at Kingfisher Bay. Either way, you’ll get to experience the poster-child sites such as Seventy Five Mile Beach, Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) and Indian Head. Two nights here should be the absolute minimum but if you’re travelling between July and November, we suggest stretching out your stay so you can add on a whale-watching trip.

Day 11

Sunshine Coast

Make the return drive south before heading to Brisbane. Spend one more night in the Sunshine Coast region but this time swapping the shore for a rustic retreat up in the rainforest-clad Hinterlands. It may only be half an hour away from the coast, but it will feel like a world away and give you a different perspective on southern Queensland.

Days 12-14

Brisbane

The return drive to Brisbane beckons but not quite the end of your Queensland chapter. Chill out in the state capital for a couple of nights (or more), seeking out the best parks, shops, cultural sites, cafés and craft breweries. There’s never a dull moment in the Riverside City and it’s a fab place to round out your holiday.

Extend your holiday

Hamilton Island

A two-hour flight from Brisbane will whisk you up to Hamilton Island. A stay here is all about peppering your down time with some Whitsunday Island hopping, some snorkelling and diving, or some time on Whitehaven Beach (all activities you can book in resort). And you could even island nights for the Great Barrier Reef sleepover of dreams as part of the ReefSleep experience.

Whitsunday Islands Cruise to Whitehaven Beach from Hamilton Island or Port of Airlie
Queensland

Spend a morning cruising the Whitsunday Islands, stopping for a walk on Whitehaven Beach. As you sail, your skipper will provide an informative commentary on the area's highlights as you cruise to the world-famous Whitehaven Beach. You’ll have time to wander along the beach or swim at your own pace before returning to Hamilton Island Marina or Port of Airlie before lunch.

The morning begins at either Hamilton Island Marina or Port of Airlie, where you’ll board the vessel for a morning Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach cruise. The boat has ample seating areas inside and out. Morning tea is included onboard as you overlook the crystal-clear waters and immaculate white sand along Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands.

Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet Chill & Grill

This full-day beach trip is ideal if you want an easy breezy way to see two of the Whitsundays’ most iconic locations in one go. You’ll make your own way to the Port of Airlie to board a comfortable day-cruise catamaran, Camira, with air-conditioned lounges, outdoor seating, and plenty of space for the journey out to Whitehaven Beach.

From the northern end of the beach, a relaxed 1.3-kilometre guided walk leads you to the Hill Inlet lookout along a path once used by the Ngaro people, with a guide sharing insights about the land and its stories. Back at the southern end of Whitehaven, you can swim, stretch out on the sand, or climb the steps to the Whitehaven Beach Lookout for a sweeping view of the coastline.

A gourmet burger lunch will be waiting for you on the beach, keeping things simple and satisfying between swims. A dedicated guide stays with the group throughout the day, offering helpful commentary and making sure everything runs smoothly. You’ll return to the Port of Airlie in the early evening after a full day of bright water, soft sand, and unhurried exploring.
