Okanagan Valley Holidays
The Okanagan Valley is a real unexpected British Columbia gem. It's one of Canada’s warmest destinations (it's home to its only desert) and is a haven for lovers of that slow outdoor summer life. However, the main draw here are the vineyards and tasting rooms: this is the country's premier wine producing regions with two distinct regions: the cool climate north and the warm climate south. Head here for the late spring, summer and early autumn to spend time by the lake shores, on and in the water, and trying the local produce at award-winning wineries.
At the southern end of the Okanagan Valley, close to the border with the United States is the small city of Osoyoos which sits in Canada’s only official desert. You can soak up the sun kissed beaches of Lake Osoyoos and try out the watersports, or hike and cycle the trails. And of course there are the surrounding wineries to visit – from large estates to small family-run vineyards. This is where you'll find the warm climate variety wines and heavier reds like Merlot and Cabinet Sauvingon.
Another city on the edge of a lake – the glistening Okanagan Lake – is Kelowna. It's located approximately halfway up the valley and is another favourite with lovers of the outdoors. Sandy beaches close to the city are the perfect spot to spend long summer days and enjoy swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing and a variety of other water based activities. To the south of Kelowna are numerous wineries producing highly rated varieties and a tour of, as well as a meal at a local vineyard is a must. Compared to its sister city down south, the focus here is on cold climate wines like Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay.
At the very north of the Okanagan Valley is Vernon which sits close to three lakes and is surrounded by grasslands and pine forest-covered rolling hills. We recommend making the most of refreshing waters and beaches of Okanagana, Kalamalka and Swan Lakes, or even dive into Ellison Provincial Park.
